TrekkingInIndia.com - Valley of Flowers Trek

Valley of Flowers Trekking
The Valley of Flowers is a beautiful meadow located at an altitude of about eleven thousand feet. It is the valley of the stream Pushpavati, a tributary of Alaknanda. Frank Smythe discovered 'The Valley of Flowers' in 1931 on his way back after a successful expedition to Mt. Kamet. Ferns, dwarf iris, dwarf larkspur, dwarf rhododendrons, primula, blue poppies, fritillaria, asters, potentillas, inula grandifloras and hundreds of other species grow wild in the valley.
The Valley of Flowers is a riot of color in August/September. Well over a thousand varieties of flowers, shrubs, orchids and plants in myriad hues, differing textures and colors paint the valley in a gorgeous display. The valley is a natural plantation surrounded by the dazzling snow clad Himalayas, a feast for the botanist and amateur alike.

Deep in the heart of the Himalayas, is this spectacular 'Valley of Flowers'. Many varieties of Himalayan wild flowers bloom here. Post Monsoons, the floor of the valley is covered with a carpet of myriad colours ! It is an awesome sight of colours with a contrasting back drop of majestic peaks.

The scope for trekking in Garhwal and Kumaon is immense. From short walks to arduous ascents to mountaineering expeditions, the diversity is staggering.

Legends associate this valley of Garhwal Himalayas with the area from where Hanumanji of Ramayana collected "Sanjeevani" herbs to revive Lakshmana, the younger brother of Ramaji. Hanumanji had to visit far-flung areas in his search for the "Sanjeevani" life - saving herbs.

Dodital Trek
Dodital is a high altitude lake at a height of 3307 mts/10847 ft. Situated amidst pine forests with the backdrop of Darwa Bugyal, a high altitude meadow; Dodital has a serene effect on the mind and body.Dodital gets its name from Dodi, the local name for trout, which are found in large numbers in the lake. Like most of the high altitude Tals, Dodital also has a legend associated with it.

The Legend, another name for this lake is Dhundital. Dhundital means Ganesh - ka - tal. In Sanskrit Dhundi is synonymous with Lord Ganesha. There is a temple which is devoted to lord Ganesha. The legend has it that Ganesha selected this place as his abode. The story goes that this is the place where Ganesha was born. Shiva is known to keep away from home for extended periods and it is during one of these long periods of absence that Ganesha was born. One day Parvati, Ganesha's mother, was having a bath in the lake. She had instructed Ganesha to guard the entrance to the lake. Just then Shiva returned from one of his long trips, and was stopped by Ganesha. Enraged, Shiva cut off Ganesha's head. When Parvati came to know about this, she was livid and demanded that Shiva restore Ganesha's life. In the interest of domestic harmony, Shiva set out in search of Ganesha's head. The first animal that Shiva came across was an elephant and Shiva restored Ganesha's life by replacing his head with an elephant's head. A book in the Dhundiraj temple relates this tale in English!

Ukhimath (1370 mts/4500 ft) is on the other side of the Mandakini River Valley from Guptkashi a relatively short steep walk by foot, or a much longer way by road.  Ukhimath is the winter seat of Kedarnath, as well as the winter home of the priest who presides over his worship.  After the Kedarnath temple closes for the winter, a movable image of Kedarnath is brought in procession to Ukhimath, where it resides until the Kedarnath temple reopens in late April or early May.

This picture shows the outer gateway to the temple complex, which is not only brightly painted and decorated, but two full stories tall (the wall also serves as the back wall of buildings inside).  The stones piled at lower left were for some sort of construction project, which was in full swing when I visited (since summer is the "slow" season ritually speaking, it made sense for the place to be torn up them.  And the nearby buildings are clearly residential, since a young girl is visible at upper right.
